Companies selling info from job applications?

I think it's a pretty common fact now that most companies sell pretty much any bit of info they can get about anyone, but I'm starting to feel kind of convinced that some places must be selling info they get from job applicants. In particular, in my own life I've realized that throughout high school and college I never used to get any spam phone calls or texts or anything, and I think that was largely because I pretty much never had to put my phone number down for anything. However, when I started applying to jobs a few years ago there was a kind of sudden shift in the number of spam phone calls I would get. I'm not sure if there's been any actual research into this type of thing, but I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences with seemingly getting more nonsense than usual sent to them after applying for jobs?
