Why do parents push kids out of their home?

I understand if someone’s battling addiction or other mental illness that the idea of allowing them to stay at home may not be possible for safety reasons. However most people do not pose a safety risk. Why do parents feel like they have to shove kids out and stop helping them? We have three, and they can stay here for their lives if they want, though they’ll be expected to do something productive with themselves just as they are expected to do so now. There is so much sadness and horror in the world, why wouldn’t people protect their kids forever? Also I think it would help take the power back from employers if, en masse, people chose to live in places where their rent was reduced or nonexistent.
