I hope this is the right subreddit. I was working for a psychological center as a front desk coordinator. My boss seemed very open, she would drop some anti-capitalist rhetoric and talk about how effed the healthcare system is. She called herself an activist and said her employees should be the same. I was really excited about this coming from a corporate place that was all about identity politics, I hoped this would be different. I took a mental health day on Tuesday which resulted in a conversation on Wednesday where she essentially asked me how I can take care of myself besides calling out of work.
Throughout my time there she would also say some stuff I took as red flags, like making fun of people who need to get on social security and how they stink and she needed Lysol to spray down after they came and went for their Evaluation. She mentioned being cheap but then also bragged about not living in a poor neighborhood. These statements felt contradictory to her activist beliefs but I let them slide chalking them up to her age (55).
After our meeting on Wednesday, she asked multiple times if I had any other concerns which I did. These concerns included her 5 months until receiving health insurance, an 8 month probation period which needs to be completed successfully in order to accrue PTO. If there is even a talking to within 12 months she withholds that PTO.
I only worked there a couple months but I’m learning to advocate for myself so I confronted her on these policies which seemed not at all to align with her ‘decolonial model’ her words.
I thought the meeting was successful until I sent a follow up email and her response to it was not at all like our discussion which I thought was positive. I felt I was being gaslit. I needed time to process and formulate a response to her email. On Friday she emails me asking to meet on Monday morning. I noticed she disabled the email account that same day and then changed the password Sunday night.
Today she terminated me for “violating company policy” which was a verbal policy to respond to emails in 24 hours (this was during training in regard to client emails) and insubordination.
I told her I felt this was not the real reason and was more likely me taking a mental health day and also addressing my concerns with her. She called me manipulative for saying this. She is a licensed psychologist with her own practice.
There is so much more but I will leave it at this. I was only there for 2 months. Is there anything I can do to ensure my financial security like applying for unemployment?
