HR just asked me (remote employee) whether I consider myself to be an employee of the state I live in, or the state in which the office is located.

Hello antiwork. I just received a very strange email from the head of HR at the company for which I currently work. As the title states, I'm a remote employee that lives in a different state than my company's office. They also asked which state's employment laws do I believe that I am governed by. They mentioned that this question is simply meant to see how I feel. But this and many other subreddits have convinced me to never under any circumstances trust HR, no matter how cool they seem. They ended the email by saying that my answer will not affect my current employment status. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. I'm tempted to keep it ambiguous by simply replying, “I do not know”
