Why do some salary employees work such long hours?

I'm 25 and have been working in the office for almost 5 years and noticed that older employees never leave. I'm a software engineer that has a job that requires me to work in the office, so I get in around 7:30am and leave around 4:00pm. I notice my other co-workers all over the age of 45 get in earlier than me and I have yet to see one leave (I've once stayed till 5:30pm). I almost think they sleep in the office or something. Whenever I leave for the day after working my 8 hours I get stares from my other co-workers like I'm some lazy POS. Thank god there's another co-worker around my age that shows up later than I do otherwise they'd really shit all over me. I honestly feel guilty for leaving when I'm supposed to, we're getting paid salary so why should I bother to…
