I’m ready to send my resignation letter!

My superiors are aware that I am quitting. And they requested a resignation letter, to return my raggedy old work uniforms, and ID. After I have called to send a 2 weeks notice, he seemed quite disappointed as if I have an obligation to them of some sort. The thing is, I have never written a resignation letter and wonder (sorry if this is a dumb question) if this is any sort of legal obligation in the State of New York. What happens if I do not pull through with what was requested and stop showing up. I am already hired with the school district; they offer benefits, union, pension, so much more. While for my other company, I was forced to pay an arm and a leg for dental, as they do not offer any sort of benefits and my boss (now former) has quelled any attempt to unionize.…
