New Boss- a contractor?

Hello, I work in Biotech- a company that calls itself a 'start-up' even though they have spent 2 years purchasing established businesses. I joined my small team less than a year ago, and we are one of the few teams bringing in new clients and profits. I love my current boss; he is a full-time employee who treats me with respect and does not micromanage. The 'issuse' is that our team is not the correct department.

(The whole team agrees we are in the wrong department) They are moving our team to another department that should be able to support us better and help us grow. The issue is that they are splitting up our small team and moving me (only me) to report under a contractor.

My new contractor boss will be paid by the hour- I am salary- this could be a good or bad situation for expecting overtime. This makes me nervous:

What protections do I have if there are issues with the contractor?

How does HR manage contractors who oversee full-time employees?

Why not promote me who has been in the organization? I will have to train my boss.

Has anyone else out there dealt with this in the past? Any suggestions?
