Got fired now company is asking me to repay 20k

Hi all, So, I’m in sales. When I got hired by my former company a year ago my contract included a “draw” of 20k for future commissions. This was paid to me in addition to my salary, over a four month period. If I received any commissions, the company would deduct the original draw. The company fired me last week. Hi all,
So, I’m in sales. When I got hired by my former company a year ago my contract included a “draw” of 20k for future commissions. This was paid to me in addition to my salary, over a four month period. If I received any commissions, the company would deduct the original draw.

The company fired me last week. Now, they are requesting full repayment of the 20k, and sent me a letter to sign in agreement or else they would appeal/dispute any attempt for me to claim unemployment and threatened to take me to court if I did not repay them.

My argument against repayment is 1) they fired me, it wasn’t my choice to leave the company 2) I was in the middle of a huge deal that I had brought to them, which will more than satisfy that debt when that deal closes 3) they have no right to demand repayment by threatening to deny unemployment.

Am I wrong here? Or should I sign the letter and agree to pay the 20k? Should I get an attorney? Thanks for any thoughts and feedback.
