How to deal with a bad boss?

Hello I hope this is the right place to discuss this. I've recently started a new service job. I'd rather not provide too many details since my boss (let's call him Gary) is active on Reddit. Initially, things were okay – Gary seemed a bit odd but was generally friendly. However, things took a strange turn. He's very insistent about us following company policies but willfully ignores rules himself. He starts off polite with customers, but his behavior deteriorates over time. I've witnessed him being rude and even yelling at clients. I've had to apologize for him more than once. He creates random rules during arguments, whether with customers or employees. He always appears busy, but when I clock in after him, none of his assigned tasks are done, so I end up doing double the work.He often shares exaggerated stories about his past, claiming he could've been a surgeon…

Hello
I hope this is the right place to discuss this.
He always appears busy, but when I clock in after him, none of his assigned tasks are done, so I end up doing double the work.He often shares exaggerated stories about his past, claiming he could've been a surgeon but chose to be a supervisor instead. He's obsessed with talking about himself and always tries to redirect conversations to himself. Once, a coworker proudly mentioned her upcoming graduation, and he immediately boasted about having over 15 degrees. He rarely listens during chats, dismisses work-related matters, yet folds easily if you're assertive(not rude). I'm one bizarre instance a coworker even stood up to being fired and remained on the payroll after a 45-minute exchange. ReHe struggles with basic spelling, asking how to spell simple words like “while” (“wile”) and “Asians” (“Asins,” “asens,” “asains”). He's insufferably narcissistic yet insecure, socially awkward (despite claiming he enjoys working with other people). He's uncurious and gets confused with foreign concepts, despite living overseas for years. He lacks essential knowledge, like meters and Celsius. He refuses to learn languages despite working with people from different countries but will openly complain when a non-native speaker struggles with English. He disrupts any sports conversations by claiming he only watches NFL because everything else is “boring.”
His sole presence creates a very hostile environment. It makes what should be a fairly easy job a nightmare. It's like working with David Brent.

Apologies for the lengthy vent
