Why is *most* work unfulfilling?

I was thinking about this earlier, about how when I do something creative such as writing. I can go on for hours and it doesn't feel mind-numbing like my usual job. Just a few weeks ago I worked on this small comic that ended up being 34 pages, and although it took a while, I was proud of it, and it didn't feel like a chore. I get the same feeling when I write a story, yet the mere idea of having to go work at my actual job the following day just makes me feel dull. And although I'm “helping to sell” products at work (retail) I don't feel accomplished by the end of the day, since it just feels like the same thing day after day. I've tried to understand why that is and I can't put my finger on it.
