For context, I have been working at my job for almost a year now and have only called in sick twice. Both times I have given proper notice.
Recently I requested a day off with only a week notice. This is how the conversation went over text.
Boss: “Hey sir! I saw your request off form! So unfortunately I will not be able to approve this due to it being less than 2 weeks in advance. You do still have the opportunity to have the night off. You will need to reach out to team mates and ask someone to cover or switch you shifts. This will need approval so just let me know if you find coverage. If you don't find coverage and don't show to the shift, you will be marked as a no call no show.
I would love to have approved this shift off, but I need to be fair and consistent with everyone, so that is why I had to deny the request. Please let me know if you have any questions!”
Me: “When you say no call no show, you mean if I don't call in and don't show up right? That's the only part of the text that threw me off, as I didn't intend on not calling and not showing up.”
Boss: “Since the time off request was denied if you call off for your shift that you requested off it would be job abandonment. A no call no show would be a lesser offense. I'm trying to be flexible, but I do have to keep standards fair across the board.”
The whole thing just came off very odd to me, and so I wanted to get the opinion of what others thought of how this conversation went. I feel like they could have just said that since I did not give a two week notice that they had to deny it. Instead the text read out very passively aggressive to me. Thank you guys!
