I work at a retailer in NY and we just installed self checkout. We were told, “For your safety, employees are not to use self checkouts. It helps reduce any perceived issues before they happen.” Basically you can't get accused of anything if you don't use it.
Days later I was off of work and in a rush, but I needed to buy 2 items from my work for an event I was attending. There was a small line at the only open regular registers and I waited for about 4 minutes as a single customer with 1 hand counted every single dollar and every single coin she paid wih. I was in a rush and couldn't wait any longer, so I used self checkout.
I then proceeded to take my receipt into the office, show the manager on duty (which I didn't need to do) just to be safe and left.
The next day I recieved a write up for it.
Can I get written up for things that happen off the clock?
