Job making others work off the clock

I work a very part time position at my local chain store. My position is the first to get off after closing. The manager and another position stay longer to finish closing. Last night the assistant manager was closing. I stayed a little later last night to help out. The manager then came and had me and the other worker clock out at the same time. I was made to leave while my coworker stayed. I told him this is not legal and he basically said, “This is what I have to do to finish.” I want to make a complaint with the department of labor. It seems like this is common. This guy is 20 and in his first semester of college. He's young and being taken advantage of by a multi billion dollar company. Should I have a discussion with the general manager or district manager as well?…

Should I have a discussion with the general manager or district manager as well? I don't know how often this happens or if the GM is aware. I think my best bet is to go straight to the state and federal level. This is in the southern US, in a very red state.
