Is it Even Possible to Have a Long Career These Days??

It just seems impossible to have longevity at a job. I worked high end retail for almost 15 years and in that time, wages stagnated, raises stagnated, more and more duties were put on the workers, benefits decreased, full-time work became a position you had to apply for after months with the company and you had to compete with others for it. I thought it was just this one job. An Anomaly. It wasn't. I worked miserably as a teacher (60-hour work weeks with unrealistic test-score expectations and unruly children), miserably in other education positions, and am miserable in my current job which I only got after applying for 50+ jobs. I just don't remember things being this bad a decade ago. Worst are wages. It should be a crime for an employer to require a bachelor's degree for less than $20 an hour starting pay. How are we supposed…

It wasn't.

Worst are wages. It should be a crime for an employer to require a bachelor's degree for less than $20 an hour starting pay. How are we supposed to survive off of this? Gas is through the roof, food is insanely expensive, yet I am only making $17.50. Someone should be locked up for this.

So if we are to find a job in this market, how are we to keep it? How are we supposed to stay long enough to retire when companies and organizations are doing everything possible to phase us out? How are we supposed to have a career when working conditions are just too miserable?

What fields of work would you recommend for longevity? I'm willing to do almost anything.
