Legality of not paying for online training?

So I’m currently working at a very popular sandwich chain temporarily before I start my new job. Before my start date they emailed me a bunch of training videos and quizzes to do through their app. It was unclear if I was supposed to do this training before I started or not, so I completed about six hours of training at home. I got paid on Tuesday and the training hours were not on there, so I asked the operations manager, who told me that the training is only paid if it’s done in store. So I wasted 6 hours of my personal time and didn’t get paid. Now I’m wondering if this is legal. My hours are logged on the app, so it’s not a matter of them not knowing how much time I spent on it. At this point I don’t think it’s worth pursuing anything if it is illegal, but I’d just like to know. This will be the last time I do any online training without knowing for certain if it’s paid or not.
