Got sick 3 weeks into the job, (june). Sick again now, boss tells me I may have to take an unpaid sick day if I am ill later this year. Salary non-exempt

This time I have covid-19, so my pay is protected. If it was not, long rant short, unless I cut into my vacation time I will have to take an unpaid sick day. I will have to cut into my vacation time anyway, to get out of negative sick PTO, but if I'm ill again I just won't get paid because over 40 hours. I make the same exact amount of money each payroll, it just seems so petty and unrealistic to take out 2-3 of my daily wages if I get covid from my irresponsible boss and coworkers again. I really don't understand this stuff, as after this pandemic my immune system is weak af and I have a hard time just battling out a cold knocking out over half PTO accrual immediately.
