Antiwork

My manager threw a fit that me and my co-worker had a conversation while cleaning so we quit.

I’m a teenager and work part time at a fast food restaurant. Since I didn’t have a license when I got the job and still don’t have one, there isn’t a ton of job options as my towns very small. I began working at this chain fast food restaurant almost a year ago and have never really had any complaints and mostly everyone seems to love me. About a month ago they even offered to start training me for a manager position even though usually you would have to be over 18. This week specifically one of my night managers had to leave early two different days because of different reasons and left me to take over all the manager responsibilities (money, computer logs, making sure everything gets done, ext) while still getting paid how much I always do since I don’t officially have the position. I like this manager…

I like this manager and did it to get some experience of closing alone while doing her a favor. Well today it was that manager, another girl (who has only been there about 5 days), and my friend from school who I enjoy working with.

To put it short (actually really long), today was a good shift up till the end. We got busy in the middle and had a bad thunderstorm but other than that everything went smoother than usual. Me, my friend, and the new girl all had the headset. When there was no one at the drive through and we where just cleaning or stocking we would turn on our headsets to the only headset feature and talk to each other about random school stuff, marching band, or just make jokes. All neutral conversations with no drama or problems. About 10 minutes before close after we had almost all stuff done and where still finishing (while somewhat keeping on our conversation) the manger burst in and starts yelling at me and my friend for talking and “not doing stuff”. Even though when she came in we where both actively doing something for close or a customer and she had been outside for 10+ minutes smoking and talking to a employee and her friend who weren’t on shift that day.

She then for some reason had the girl not on shift and her friend who doesn’t even work there come in and start cleaning everything as fast as possible?

Me and my friend where both very confused and tried to speed up our work, though did get back on headset and started to get express that we where angry and frustrated about the situation as the manager tried saying she “told us to stop talking before she went outside”, news flash, she never did or said anything remotely close. I mentioned I would talk to our GM sometime as I didn’t want to be treated that way and that the problem needed to be brought up. Though we never said anything directly bad about our manager. Just that we where mad, frustrated, and confused.

I guess sometime while we were cleaning the manger took the headset from the other girl (which I didn’t say anything I didn’t want this woman to hear anyway). She got back inside again (not sure why she was out there), asked us if there was “something we wanted to say to her face”, and THREW the headset that we just got fixed into the computer which it bounced off of onto the floor.

At this point both of us are in shock and silently cleaning as fast as possible.

My friends mom comes in and the manager goes off about how she knows my friend will tell her mom about the yelling but that my manager has a good reason since we were “not cleaning”.

She’s lucky I stayed to finish (I should have left right then), as her and everyone in the front left while I was mopping and finishing up. She even turned off the lights WHILE she knew I was mopping.

I automatically texted my GM and told her I would not longer be coming into work after tonight’s situation. My friend later did the same.

Maybe I would understand more if the manager was strict, though all the time she’ll be on phone calls with her boyfriend and family while working, talks while working with us all the time, and was pretty nice and fine the beginning half of the shift (honestly not sure why she switched like that).

O, and just incase I forgot to mention it this manager is like 40 something, has multiple children, and me and my friend are still in high school!

Now they only have 2 shift leads (as I was supposed to become one to allow the night manger to have 1 or 2 days off) + they lost two of their current longest working employees (other than managers). So, hopefully they have fun with that.
