Alternative rules around giving notice when quitting

I learned from this sub that giving a two week notice is customary in the US and that you guys are generally against this (and I understand why). In my country the amount of notice you need to give is based on the amount of time you worked for your company. For example I needed to give 5 weeks notice when I quit my previous job after working there for 1.5 years. The plus side is that if they would've fired me they would have needed to give me 10 weeks notice or simply pay me for that period while I sit at home. Do you think this is a better system or do you prefer to have the ability to quit without notice?
