Led down the garden path

I applied for a job with a tech company and they’ve made me jump through a few hoops. However, I was equal to the task (please forgive my hubris), and they confirmed I was the first person they’re inviting to the final stage interview. After a couple of weeks it felt like they were ghosting me so I chased it. They told me it was a diary issue so I let it go. Today I’ve been emailed a platitude-laden “you’re not quite right” email. There’s no actual feedback: it’s just an attempt to absolve responsibility. My initial instinct was to retaliate but in the the cold light of sober morning I think I should forget the month’s worth of time I wasted on this role. I am so perplexed that employers think they can treat us this way.
