My boyfriend works at a small business 15-20+ employees, on the production team as production manager. The owner texted the whole production team on Thursday letting them know that there wasn’t enough work to do, and not to come in Friday. He did not indicate whether or not he’d be paying them for that day. Bf let it go, because he was happy to have the day off and everyone seemed to be ok with it. However, it is now Sunday and the owner just texted the group saying there’s still not enough to do, and not to come in Monday. Still no mention of pay.
Bf has been working for this company for over 2 years and this has never happened. The whole team is full time, Monday-Friday. This is not shift work, and they all rely on consistent income. Owner gives them 40 hours (one measly week) of PTO per year, but closes the shop down over Christmas for a week, so they either have to use it then, or not get paid. My point is that there is no PTO to apply to these sudden missing hours. Full time employees need to be given full time hours if that’s the expectation… right? Am I missing something here?
He says he wants to get ahold of an employee handbook, and be 100% sure they’re not getting paid before he says anything. I figured I’d post here in the meantime to see if anyone has advice. I’m so angry for all of them.
