Paid less than the new guy

I started an AP job for a large concessions company in February. I was hired on at $27 an hour. A week later my whole family died in a house explosion. I took a couple of days off but continued to work. The AR person made $30 an hour which seemed fine considering he had more responsibilities. I sent an email to my boss demanding a raise to $35 an hour and the title change I was promised. I am done being underpaid. I am done being overworked. Is this wage discrimination due to my gender? If my email isn't addressed by the end of the week, I will be sending a follow up email to HR and my bosses boss about the sexism and nepotism.
