First post here but I need to scream into the void real quick so my brain can stop rotting for 5 minutes.
I work in a government program in Canada to stop the spread of invasive species via watercraft. It's a typical 8 hour shift job but in effect is a 10 hour job thanks to my long commute, leaving me no energy or desire to engage in any of my hobbies or social life past work. The actual job itself is whatever but it's everything else that blows absolute shit.
I was hopeful that the longer work season compared to my previous job would be enough to get me comfortable with my savings, but no. Between taxes and gas and rent and food my bank account has hovered around the same thousandish dollars I had back in April.
Then there's the typical work horseshit of “you're closed half an hour before your shift is done but you have to stay some arbitrary amount of time if you clean up too fast ” (it takes like 5 minutes).
Additionally the person I work with is an insufferable feces golem in human skin who I could write an entire thesis on why he deserves to be damned for all eternity for the crime of being so unlikeable. Now I believe in slacking at work but when it is to the detriment of your coworkers I wish nothing but the worst sort of hell upon you. He is approximately 50% of the agony I get from this job.
Everything I could look past (not really but let's pretend) but the one thing that crushes me and hammers in how much I'm wasting my life more than anything else is this:
None of these boaters or fishers give a shit.
They ignore our multiple signs to stop for inspection, they bitch and moan and make it as frustrating as possible to make us do our job, half the time I they have some freak confederate or fuck Trudeau sticker and I just have to smile like I'm not talking to someone who thinks I'm a degenerate cause of my superior taste in the same sex. I get constant questions and invalidations about how the program doesn't work and that zebra mussels (and others but you try explaining that to people who don't even know what bivalves are) are just going to spread everywhere regardless.
Best part is you know these troglodytes will be the first in line to weep over the destruction of the fishing industry when invasives destroy the ecosystem.
I've also been reintroduced to the automatic response to immediately seethe with rage the moment my downtime is interrupted by some asshole customer who's here to interrupt my attempts to calm my brain down.
Moral of the story kids: maybe reconsider that biology degree especially if you don't have the capacity to get more than a bachelor's without wanting to be sent to sweet oblivion.
