A good friend of mine has been working extremely hard for the last few years at a local retail specialty store as the assistant store manager. Years ago, he had dropped out of HS but later got his GED, and he genuinely likes what he does and is good at it. The store was privately owned by “Joe” who had been paying my friend what I have always thought was too low a salary for the amount of hours put in and basically constant availability. Joe recently decided to sell the store to the main corporate entity. One of the managers came in to talk to my friend and observed him working. The also flew him for a day to corp headquarters. My friend is very hard on himself due to having some troublesome teenage years and basically now doesn't know his worth / has low self-esteem. The corp regional manager offered my friend the job of store manager now that it's under corp ownership, but said the salary would remain the same. Not only was this guy already getting underpaid by probably $5-10K a year, he would have significantly increased responsibility as the store manager but no wage increase???
Ultimately, my friend pushed back and they did offer a $15K salary increase. They're still getting a bargain, that's for sure. But it makes me rage mad that they even tried to keep him at the old salary despite promoting him to store manager. GTFOH.
