Job search woes.

I was paid a slightly below average wage for my role as a general manager and events coordinator for a privately owned, local family business. I worked my way up from an entry position to general manger over the course of 20 years. Last year I nearly died due to stress of overwork and the family who owned the business, who had known me since my teen years and who know my wife and children personally, quietly ended my contract whilst I lay in intensive care. We’ve tried legal proceedings, but I’m now a broke guy with no job and they’re millionaires with multiple businesses and according to our lawyers, I don’t have much of a case – but that’s not why I’m ranting.

I’ve since been applying for work within the events/hospitality sector and even though my degree is IN hospitality and I have 20 years experience – 7 of which are at management level, I haven’t received a single interview in 8 months.

I’ve become so desperate for work that I began applying for bar work and entry level retail jobs – but I’ve been repeatedly met with “you’re over qualified for this role” because I’m in my 30’s with a degree ️

Today I have my first interview since getting out of hospital in January.

It’s for a part time office cleaner.

According to the recruitment manager I’ve been liaising with (who is about 7 years younger than me) I’m one of approximately 500 “hopefuls” and if I make it through this interview stage, there’s a second interview with the top brass and then a trial afternoon for the final five candidates.

Again:

This is for a part time role as an office cleaner.

Why are they treating it like it’s American Idol?

Either way, we really need the money.

Wish me luck I guess.
