Is a bonus for a year of work completed forfeited after termination?

I had a pretty toxic situation at work, spoke up about it after a bit over a year, and got myself forced out. It was a consulting position in finance, intense but pretty cushy outside of the toxicity & hours. They put me on a PIP prior, and have now offered me a severance. Our bonuses are for a fiscal year ending in September and I was there for the full year of 9/22-9/23, so I'm wondering if they still send me my bonus or that's gone. Spoke to a family friend who's my usual attorney briefly and he thought I would get it, which surprised me. What dictates this, and what (if anything) should I do? Thanks for any help
