Normalizing businesses being so understaffed they have to close early/open late.

Is this seriously resulting in higher profit margins? I work in a shopping plaza in a well off new England town. Half the stores are open limited hours and have hand written signs with the days hours, usually 5-8 hours they're open, and then citing understaffing as the reason. Our store will be closing early on Halloween because we only were given enough hours to schedule two people on Halloween. One of them is me, and I am the stores dog trainer and will be running classes until 8pm. That leaves just my manager on the floor of a very busy store for 6 hours. We are also open normal store hours and get no holiday pay. All the food service places around me close hours early and put up signs saying they didn't have enough staff. How is it better for profit to keep stores open for half the hours they should be? I'm glad to see people finally refusing to work on just a skeleton crew. I just can't believe it hasn't sent a message yet.
