I'm a DSP(Direct Support Professional) in the United States.
My job mainly consists of being a caregiver to adults who fall somewhere within the autism/mental illness spectrum. I just discovered in detail that when the clients go on their annual vacation, the staff members are left with one of three choices: 1) hope that shifts are available at other locations, 2) use your personal time, 3) take the financial hit.
This was definitely not disclosed in orientation. Thankfully I picked up an open shift at my main location. Were I not so fortunate, I'd have to use personal time, and thus plan all future vacations around the clients. Is this even real life anymore?
Once upon a time, if your employers decided to shut down for holidays or personal festivities, you'd be compensated for any lost time. Now, it seems YOU have to pay for THEIR leisure. I wouldn't be so annoyed if it weren't so damned BRAZEN.
