Why would a company fire me a month later after finding out about a time conflict, while I was still performing at a high level?

So I got terminated a few months ago and it kind of came as a surprise. I was called in for a “meeting” about something else, instead it was for my termination. Which totally blindsided me and the primary reason was because I had lied about a time conflict. I tried to point out that even while I had lied and I was sorry about it that I was still producing good quality work and then I was told this is not about my performance. Employer was at will, which I get. But they apparently figured out that I had lied about my time conflict a month prior to my termination, and sat on this information for a month. At the time it came so fast, I didn’t have a single chance to react. Does any of this make sense? Tbh just speculation because I have been following their career…

Tbh just speculation because I have been following their career page and haven’t seen my position posted. I think the project I was hired for was most likely being scraped, it’s a startup. I was the SME for them in my discipline. They got some bad results from their testing and were going to switch directions. They likely had an easy out from me. Also I think my manager had it kind of out for me, was very micromanaging and confrontational.

It’s just I get it I was wrong for lying but in no way shape or form did my time conflict it impact our schedule, my work or overall contribution.
