Demoted after calling off sick

Hello, everyone! I'm a unionized worker in California. I've been working in my current department for almost 2 years (already past probationary period). I have an active medical certification directive which is about to expire (for a total of 1 year). I called off sick recently, and I complied with all of the requirements outlined in the directive. This is also my lone sick leave usage since being placed on a medical certification directive. A few days later, my manager called me in and stated that I'm being permanently reassigned to my old department. This transfer would result in a loss of a pay and would technically be a demotion. When asked for a reason, manager cited “departmental needs.” I asked to clarify if it was performance related or any other issues, but still all I'm given is “departmental needs.” Of course, it may not be related to the sick…

I've contacted my union and am pending a response. Is there anything else I can do about this at this time?
