We only hire the best!

I've fallen for this quite a few times. There's a piece of corporate culture (at least the places that I tend to go) that “we only hire the best,” or “you have to be a rockstar to even get an interview here.” Amazon calls you a “bar raiser.” Netflix calls you a “stunning colleague.” Or maybe you're “Smart, and Gets Things Done™.” It definitely feeds my unsatisfiable ego! But you know what? Most places' interviews are not easier than the ones at the “elite” employers. They're just betting their (cheap!) ego-fluffing means you won't go check, and that you won't leave and get a better paycheck or work-life balance in the process. Take care of yourselves, be excellent to each other, don't fall for the propaganda.
