“I mean this is how you pay your bills, right”

The absolute audacity of my boss to say this during a 1:1 meeting that quickly became a discussion of not meeting her expectations just a week ago. Let me back track a bit because this has got to be retaliation for my honest opinion of the regulatory enforcement this company has buried itself in. Prior to this quote in head line, just a week prior I was in a meeting with two consultants she had set to fire due to “budget cuts” per our discussion of why they’d be let go. Consultants affirmed that was the case to myself and another VP on call. VP and consultants begin to state how bad this company is doing because it simply does not handle compliance well (for the past seven years theyve been fined by pretty much every regulatory body you can think of i.e SEC).

I say “this place needs culture and training development, otherwise this is a house of cards waiting to be exposed”. I know the two consultants didnt relay, given they were fired the next day (as my manager had noted to me privately). The VP is my best guess given he’s been the most anti social and resistant to project work. For instance, whenever she’s paired me to work with him, he ends up waiting for her to completely hate the work Ive single handedly done so he can hope on email and say “we will remediate this immediately and produce a proposal to a higher standard”.

Asshole.

Now for two weeks since that group call and this VP pretty much insinuating I was doing work without his feedback in our project, my manager is now giving me the worst attitude. Granted she is the type to never ask how you’re doing at the top of a meeting, or say thank you when you go the extra mile (and above your pay grade) but she has been particularly cold. Giving all the red flags an employer does when they want you out. It started with claiming I was late on a deadline – untrue she set a date verbally one week then changed her mind the next week. Then it was “youre not meeting my expectations”. When I asked what on, please provide specifics. She harped on this made up deadline. Handed the work that same day.

Next it was “this is a verbal warning that I dont think you are fit for this role”. I started suspecting termination coming. She then had HR look up my resume, to see if I falsified anything. Im not a liar – I have true credentials on there. I was insulted and I let her know so and that I was surprised to hear she didnt believe in my “commitment to the Firm”.

HR asked me to resubmit my certification information, so I did. Next it was “you havent completed this training”… mind you its due 12/01. I got it done yesterday, 11/08 and submitted expense report.

Today will be Friday 11/10 and there is another freaking one on one that she titled “goals” scheduled for 11:30 am. But after I sent HR an email requesting confirmation my resume was in the clear and included her in communications (just to try and clear this weird air), this goal meeting was now pushed to 4:30pm.

This is a pattern of hers. She bullies people for weeks, digs with HR and eventually schedules a 4:30 where she fires you.

I am shaking with anger so forgive if I sound all over the place but this employer and leadership behavior is unacceptable.

Im being fired for the same old turnover excuse shes used on now 2 compliance officers, 1 vp and recently these 2 consultants. Its performative.

Bullshit – she needs a fall guy for all of 2023 enforcement actions coming down the pipeline.

Vent over. Hate this position I find myself in for having integrity in a career that requires it. How else can I be a compliance professional?!

P.S. the “budget cuts” that had two consultants fired magically disappeared when we hired two new people two days later. Sick of the lack of transparency and toxicity this environment encourages.
