(Rant) My debit card got declined trying to put $10 of gas in my car so I could complete my sales route.

For context. I work for a large beverage (alcohol) distributor. I’m directly responsible monthly for over $300k in gross revenue. Recently they ended their fleet program which provided us a company car/gas card and went to a mileage reimbursement with your own car program. We were told we be given a flat rate and a secondary variable rate based on miles driven and could purchase our fleet vehicles for well below market value via a no interest loan that would be deducted from your paycheck. Month 1 no issues. Miles driven, gas spent, wear/tear all aligned with reimbursement. Suddenly, when month 2 reimbursement comes through, it’s more than half less than the previous month. Weird. What changed. Daily routes the same. Mileage almost identical. Reimbursement 40% less. “Oh thanks for your inquiry. We’re actually not going to be paying for your commute so the first and last leg of your…

“Oh thanks for your inquiry. We’re actually not going to be paying for your commute so the first and last leg of your day is not reimbursed.” Zero communication of any policy changes.

Mind you, I was assigned my route. I didn’t chose it. My closest customer is 15 miles from my house. So at minimum now 30 miles a day are now not reimbursed.

I don’t have an office. I have an assigned route and my job requires me to be on location to perform my duties. We also have days that end with sales meetings at the warehouse (30+ miles from my home) and on the one day a week we don’t call on customers we’re assigned teams to tackle the the marketplace. I’ve had to drive over 70 miles one way on those days to help in a co-workers territory, yet somehow that’s considered part of my commute.

Fast Forward to today. I got paid on the 7th. Mortgage, utilities, and credit card payments all but eliminated that paycheck. They’re late processing my mileage reimbursement which is supposed to be deposited by the 15th. I’m in the middle of nowhere, 50 miles from home and less than 10 miles of gas in the tank. I know the bank account is low but I’m showing $42.17 in my account. Go to put $10 of gas in my car and my card was declined. Water bill was processing and I actually only have $3.06 to my name. Luckily I found $7 on the ground at that gas station (which I would normally turn in) so I could at least finish my day and get home.

I reluctantly message my boss asking for help so I can run my route tomorrow (he has a company gas card) and the response I get is he’ll give me a gift card for the display I sold in the other day.

ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME. You’re going to give me my incentive money via gift card so I can fill up my vehicle to continue to make you more money.

Cool cool cool. All those shelves I always fill so I can increase my sales numbers because my drivers can’t be bothered to do such things on delivery. Yeah fuck that. I spent my last fuck to give on gas. I’m now actively in quiet quit mode. PLEASE fire me. I’ll probably make more money on unemployment at this rate.
