Contractor doing unpaid “Ghost” Hours

Hi, everyone! I feel confused, and I don't know what to do. I would love some advice! I'm 26F with my MBA and living in California. I currently work as a contractor at a large asset management company. Before this, I worked at a reasonably large consulting company. I currently have a 7-month contract that is up on 1/1. When I talked to my manager a month ago, instead of asking for full-time, I asked to extend my contract. Last week, I told him I wanted to only work from 8 to 5 pm and take my lunch break.

He threatened me and asked me if finance was really what I liked and that the contract was not signed yet.

For the past six months, I've been working 50-55 hours a week and not getting paid overtime, even though it's part of my contract and is my right as a contractor in California. I was told to work ghost hours, and I did.

I told my contracting company how he threatened me and how I've been working ghost hours. My main point of contact was surprised. For context, at this company, all full-time employees at my level get paid overtime, and so do contractors (except those on my team).

Now I'm being told by friends that what's happening is illegal.

The old guard tells me to suck it up because Im learning. My friends my age tell me I should sue or at least file an HR complaint. My friends who are ten years

I'm producing more work a week than most analysts at my level (who have more years of financial experience than I do).

The market is terrible right now, but I know I have a good resume. It’s just that I'm worried about how only seven months at this firm will look. I’m super angry at my manager, but mostly angry that I'm the only one being treated this way. I want to sue, but I am worried about creating additional stress. I want to file an HR complaint, at the least, but I know that means not having my contract resigned, no matter the outcome.
