(TW: SA) Had to give HR my sexual assault police report to remain WFH

Posting to vent. I was referred to my current position two years ago and confirmed with recruiters/hiring managers during interviews that I’d be fully remote. Company announces mandatory 3 day/week RTO this year, and I learn that because I only confirmed my WFH verbally, that I am included in RTO. I never would have even considered the job if it wasn’t fully remote! I submitted a formal remote work request and my manager and I meet with HR to make the case that I was verbally promised full time remote, my team’s spread across the country, the office lighting triggers migraines, work is 100% online, etc., but HR wouldn’t budge. They showed me a list of legitimate reasons for WFH accommodations, and one was “victim of stalking/sexual assault”.

I had been sexually assaulted in the neighborhood that my office is in earlier this year, something personal that I don’t enjoy having to bring up, especially in a professional environment, but it was the only thing left that I could think of.

I submitted the police report with the details of my sexual assault along with my second remote work accommodation request to HR, and they finally approved it.

Absolutely insane and a violation of my privacy that disclosing this information was the only way that they would budge. Happy I can remain WFH now, but so so so annoyed that it had to come to this. Remember to get it in writing during your interviews if you want to be remote!
