Being an employee makes me feel like a modern day “slave”

I find it odd that so many companies can get away with paying minimum wage or underpaying their employees. This despite the fact many of these companies have millions ( if not billions) in profits every year. But instead of distributing this wealth fairly, employees have to work unreasonable amount of hours, just to make ends meet.  While a few people at the top are getting richer and richer, without really having to work as much.  I don’t even understand how it’s humane to be working 40+ hours a week. This barely gives anyone time for their families, friends, hobbies or else. What kind of life is this?  The fact that you're required to pay a substantial amount of taxes on your income (even when you have a low/average wage). Where I live you also pay 25% VAT for foods, clothes and other goods. So even though many people are…

The fact that you're required to pay a substantial amount of taxes on your income (even when you have a low/average wage). Where I live you also pay 25% VAT for foods, clothes and other goods. So even though many people are not being paid decently, they still have to pay all these taxes.  Which is ridiculous.

It’s really weird that you can’t take a day off as you like, just because of a contract. And even when you’re sick, there are certain stupid conditions and rules. For example quite often you’re required to give a doctors note. And in those cases you’re basically forced to get a consultation, just to get a day (or more) off from work.  That you typically have to pay for. Also don’t get me started on how you cannot take out vacations as you like without permission from your higher-ups. So how much freedom do we really have?

The fact that it’s primarily your employer who decides what time you have to be in at work, and also what days. Most people have very little say when it comes to this.  If they want you to work Friday night, then you basically just have to do it.

Also most employers expect you to pick up their calls or answer them outside of work. This for example regarding work itself or to ask you to fill in for someone. Which in reality means they expect you to be available 24/7. Why exactly do we have to do this?

Another thing I find weird is that most work places only give you unpaid 30 min breaks. Who is seriously able to eat properly and relax for this short amount of time? IMO it should at least be 45 min ( and paid). Without having to work extra.

All in all, I really hate being an employee. And all of these things makes it feel like modern day “slavery” to me. Where you ultimately are forced to give away your freedom to survive.
