Getting laid off from your job just sucks. In rare instances, it works out in your favor. I have two examples:
Employer continued to fund my 401k for 18 months after I left. Another engineer got the same pleasant surprise. This company fought me tooth and nail over unemployment benefits, but they kept putting $400/month into my retirement fund. They never asked for the money back, it just stopped – and I rolled it into my IRA.
Another layoff, the company kept paying my health insurance for 3 months after I left. Insurance for my wife and kids too. They laid off the office manager, and the temp just kept paying the bill. Roughly a $6k mistake on their part.
Anyone have stories where the employer's incompetent layoff somehow helped you?
