Workplace Etiquette or How to Survive HeII

There seems to be a lot of things that surprise folks in the workplace, so I was hoping to demystify some of it. Please let me know if I missed anything. The company you work for cares more about the leased copier than it cares about you. It will cost them more to replace the copier. They don't care about your struggles. They don't care if your mother broke her hip, or your child is sick, or your beloved pet dies. This is another reason they like the copier better. No human issues. NO ONE in the workplace is your friend. Anything you say can and will be used against you so someone else can climb over you, or at least make sure you can't climb. You're starting to understand the whole copier thing now, huh? The copier doesn't start crap with the printer. Don't EVER stop trying to 'better…

There seems to be a lot of things that surprise folks in the workplace, so I was hoping to demystify some of it. Please let me know if I missed anything.

  1. The company you work for cares more about the leased copier than it cares about you. It will cost them more to replace the copier.

  2. They don't care about your struggles. They don't care if your mother broke her hip, or your child is sick, or your beloved pet dies. This is another reason they like the copier better. No human issues.

  3. NO ONE in the workplace is your friend. Anything you say can and will be used against you so someone else can climb over you, or at least make sure you can't climb. You're starting to understand the whole copier thing now, huh? The copier doesn't start crap with the printer.

  4. Don't EVER stop trying to 'better deal' your company. You owe them NOTHING. You owe yourself the very best that is available, so ABC.

  5. DO NOT LET YOUR WORKPLACE MAKE YOU CRAZY! I have moderate GAD w/PA and PTSD from a place I stayed way too long at. I still have nightmares about their unrealistic expectations and the constant demands from everyone and only being one person. I remember all the mornings I'd contemplate causing an accident just so I would have an excuse to be out for awhile…or forever.

  6. Never, I mean NEVER, pass up any sort of life opportunity (other work, vacations, nights out, school, etc) due to work. You TELL them you're doing something. You don't ask. My mom had an opportunity to visit Europe, expenses paid, but my mom's workplace wouldn't give her the time off (it was 3 weeks, but she'd been at the company 12 years). They sure missed her when she quit and had an AMAZING time touring Europe.

  7. It's not your life. The toil you do to make others rich is because the system is built to use us and dispose of us like broken machines. Find a way to be teflon, or diamonds, or gold. And find your purpose and satisfaction elsewhere.

Best of luck from someone departing the whole damn thing…finally!
