Work wants me to read a book on my own time.

I started a job and on the first day, they handed me a copy of “The Servant: A Simple Story About the True Essence of Leadership” and told me to read it in the first month at this job. Now I have to be part of a new hire discussion with leadership where this book will be discussed. I haven't read it. My time is my time, and if you expect me to read a book, then expect me to do it on the clock. I plan on bluffing my way through it. Anyone else run across this kind of thing?
