Accommodation denied

Hello, i have an autoimmune disorder that has been much more difficult to manage since transitioning from 1st shift (6a-3p) to 2nd shift (3p-12a) 4 months ago. I went through the reasonable accommodation process and provided all applicable medical documents and a letter from my doctor supporting this. I was informed today that my request was denied by HR. I have not received a formal letter stating the denial and reasoning but am wondering if anyone has gone through something similar and/or has any insight on this. I believe there reasoning for denial will be that i knew the position was for 2nd shift when i interviewed. Sadly i did not anticipate the disruption to my condition that this shift would have on me. Thank you edit: i also want to add that i am apart of a union so seniority is what determines shifts
