(Context: My dad is dying) “Obviously if someone asked for a week off [unpaid], that would be inappropriate”

This all just got so much harder. I told my boss that my dad is dying, hospice estimates a week or less. I could get up to 3 days paid bereavement leave, “depending on the circumstances, like if you have to leave town”, and possibly some unpaid leave too, “depending on circumstances.” I have no PTO because my PTO policy at work sucks. A week a year, accrued over time, and I haven’t been here crazy long, not long enough to accrue much. I can’t even afford to take time off NOW to be with him and my family that’s an hour away while he passes. I work in a nursing home, and I’m supposed to just continue going to work taking care of yet more sick and dying elderly people (I’ve lost 5 residents in the last 2 months) while my dad is dying, and I won’t even be…

I struggle with some pretty severe mental illness, and my mental health is getting rough as is. But God forbid I take a week off (UNPAID) because my last living parent died. “That would be inappropriate.”
