People at my job do not know how to take a day off. I’m so tired of people who are like “I’m off but I’ll be available and have my work phone on.” My idiot manager was taking off for his daughter’s graduation but I could still see he was active on Teams form his work phone. I’ve seen people with sick children still clocking in.
I hate this mindset because it encourages new people in the department to act the same way. So for context, I am a data analyst so this doesn’t pertain to me but our department is for “fraud investigators”. They were stripped of their duties 18 months ago to help another department process applications. During a meeting, when talking about not having done their normal job duties and working overtime one of the investigators said “I’m not complaining. I don’t say ‘Why do I have to do this?’ I say ‘I GET to do this.’ We’ll ride this thing ‘til the wheels fall off.“ I bet she likes her boot medium rare.
At a conference last year, the room erupted in laughter when a speaker who was talking about generations in the workplace sarcastically said “And then there’s Gen Z. They want to be paid for their ValUe.” I work with people 20+ years older than me and it feels isolating because I don’t have many younger people who understand that you SHOULD be paid accordingly for the value you’ve helped a company create. Have fun being exploited I guess. I’m someone go promptly logs out at 5, doesn’t work overtime and does not answer my phone on days off. A job will never come before my health.
Might I also add: the median salary at this agency is around $41,000. The effort and strain people are putting on themselves for that salary is asinine.
