“What do you do for work?”

I’ve always hated this question. I gave birth over the weekend and had to answer it several times as small talk with the nurses, doctor, and anesthesiologist. I work in research at a well-known hospital system and just dread the question. My job is fine, but it’s really stressful and not a part of who I am, and definitely not relevant or on my mind while I am preparing to push a human baby out of my body. I have never once considered asking someone what their job is upon meeting them. It’s so weird to me!
