I work at a private dental office, so I work with the dentist who is the owner, and his wife is the office manager.
I am starting to hate working for them. His wife is a bit intolerable in that she complains about everything and micro-manages. She doesn't really know anything about dental front office, so when they first opened and hired me, I set up the system we use for scheduling, got paperwork and templates made, got in network with insurances, made the training manual, etc.
But she does things that drive me absolutely crazy sometimes. For example, if you are on the phone with a patient and she is listening in on it, she'll keep telling you what to say from the side, or tries to correct what you are saying. ALWAYS. She also complains about the back office and how inefficient they are, meanwhile the assistants are hardly ever able to take a lunch, they normally work through it and starve the entire shift. Doctor tends to over schedule patients, and it leaves us running behind a lot, or without break in between patients.
When I've called out before because I was sick, they would tell me I have to come in because his wife has an event or sports thing with their kids and she can't be in the office and there was no one else at the front except me. Or now that we have added another person in the front, they talk shit when someone calls out and start rambling about, “I never called out when I worked, I would put on my big girl pants and just work.” But she leaves the office constantly for her kids while the rest of us come in early or stay late if needed when a dental case runs late.
Don't get me wrong, they are very nice and sweet although at times it is very two-faced. They are pretty accomadating too, and I get paid well. If I need to come in early, they are happy to work with me if the schedule allows.
The doctor also comes to the front all the time to complain about the small things that go wrong, even if we've done 100 things right. For example, he came to the front the other day and goes, “I had to change the schedule and a few of the appointments because no one ever comes to ask me how I want the schedule to look so I just changed it.” And he tells us he doesn't like having to repeat himself and wants his employees to do things right the first time it is asked. But he changes his mind on how things are run all the time, so it's hard to keep up…
Another thing is that doctor and his wife will fight in the office at times, or she'll tell us to do something and not tell him, so it puts us in a very awkward position.
All of these things have just kind of built up, and i'm starting to resent it here. I am applying to other places, but I might get paid a few dollars less an hour. Do you think it's worth it? Am I just overthinking this? I've been going back and forth for a couple months now.
