First time I’ve been talked out of a job…

Ok so this is kind of a weird one but I’ll do my best to explain. My old boss from about a year ago (we’ve since both gone to separate companies, same field) reached out and offered me a crazy position. Hybrid in the field / WFH position, about 3x what I make currently and seemed like a very good opportunity. I did two phone interviews and things went very well. I had set up a third in person interview and was essentially told the job was mine if I want it. Here’s where it gets weird, my old boss called me Tuesday night at 930pm to chat quick. Weird but sure whatever. Well, this was far from a quick chat. This ended up being a 45 minute drunken rant about how difficult and annoying the job is. Ok so this is kind of a weird one but I’ll do my best to explain. My old boss from about a year ago (we’ve since both gone to separate companies, same field) reached out and offered me a crazy position. Here’s where it gets weird, my old boss called me Tuesday night at 930pm to chat quick. Weird but sure whatever. Well, this was far from a quick chat. This ended up being a 45 minute drunken rant about how difficult and annoying the job is. My old boss proceeded to tell me how unprofessional everyone else was, how the client at the job absolutely hates the company and is about to cancel the contract, the supervisors in place all need to be replaced, and that essentially whoever takes this position is going to be the fall guy for everyone else. In my specific line of work, this is career suicide (would be without a job due to how the contract is set up, your employment is tied to the contract not the company itself).

So what the fuck? I’ve never had someone call and talk me out of a job before. I’m still going to go through with the third in person interview, but my interest in the position has completely disappeared. I had a big corporate visit yesterday and I mentioned this to one of my superiors who is actually going to give me a boost in pay to get me to stick around so things are going to work out but damn… way to boost my ego thinking I was going to get a good opportunity just to find out my old boss was throwing me to the wolves to save himself. Wild.
