VP reprimanded me verbally for discussing salaries with the employee i would be replacing if i was to be promoted. Seems like this promotion is not going to be in the cards for me even though I am overqualified and the only applicant. I just dont think this should affect my career, what do i do?

The title, but, for specifics, I was told over the phone to not discuss salaries with anyone, ever again multiple times. That he was highly disappointed with me. I haven't been written up to my knowledge. The company is in a state where there is a right to discuss salaries. To be clear, i didnt necessarily want this promotion. It just seems i upset alot of people and the promotions i do want might be farther away now. Feels like i burned alot of bridges in this company. I am not sure what the best course of direction is. I don't want to leave this company. I just want my boss to apologize and for this to not affect my career. I don't trust HR to handle this correctly. I dont want to damage my career or my place at this company and just this month alone, i would be…

Its just so clear that i am in the right and they are in the wrong here. I want to go back to being in good standing as i was yesterday. Now i am scared of being fired or disciplined.

They structured the roles to where i had more opportunity than those above me.. I don't know what to do. Im sure they could find a normal reason to fire me. I am not perfect but i try my best and i have made them alot of money. Do i have to bring this to HR?
