Major retailer requires personal cell phone use for work

My roommate recently started work as a cashier at a major retail company in the US. They have her using her phone to call other employees in the store, review customer purchases at self check out and do employer training videos. Like what if she didn't have a cell phone or it breaks? Her phone already doesn't charge right. How much do you need to spend to claim business related expenses on your taxes, especially if not self employed? We live in Michigan so we don't have laws on protecting emplotees from employer requiring use of personal devices (i think?)
