I don't think people realize how detrimental and unnatural the vast majority of careers are to the human body and mind. Our bodies were designed to be in a clean and toxic-free environment with access to fresh air, engaging in physical movement for most of the day. Our modern jobs and lifestyles are the complete opposite of that.
Let's begin with the infamous 9 to 5 jobs. The average commute in America is around 30 minutes but for many, it is often much longer than that. Since most Americans drive to work, that's at least an additional hour of sitting on top of being mostly sedentary for 9-10 hours at your office job. So from morning to evening, most American office workers are in a sedentary state which is incredibly unhealthy to the body. Even exercising once a day does not make up for being immobile for the rest of it. While being in a walkable city is great for movement, you must then deal with the constant toxic fumes of the cars and traffic around you, air/noise pollution, crime, smoking/vaping in your face, and drug addicts doing drugs in public (there are videos of crackheads smoking crack in the NYC subway with the smoke filling up the car). Then, of course, many corporate jobs can be chronically stressful and taxing on the mind which is just as unhealthy as sitting all day.
What about blue collar work? While blue collar jobs are better in terms of physical movement, many deal with a hazardous environment and the work is often too physically demanding, especially over many years. Let's go over the main trade jobs. Electrician work is incredibly dangerous as electricity, is obviously dangerous and abestos exposure is high in this field. One 2018 study reported that electricians were 16 times more likely to develop mesothelioma than the general population due to abestos exposure. Welding can be harmful to the eyes even with proper protection and you are constantly exposed to carcinogens as you're continuously inhaling burning metals. HVAC work often involves being around toxic chemicals and contaminants. Same with plumbing, plus plumbing is fucking gross. Even something as innocuous-seeming like carpentry exposes you to horrible toxins that increases your risk of developing cancer and disease. The same goes for any job in construction or manufacturing. Basically, every trade or industrial job forces you to deal with a physically toxic environment, often while in the extreme heat or cold or dangerous spaces, doing back-breaking labor.
Even working in restaurant kitchens is toxic to human health and increases cancer risk due to the constant exposure to the smoke and fumes from grilling, frying, and general cooking of food.
Graveyard shift work is self-explanatory.
Similar to office jobs, many retail work involve sitting or standing around for most of the day.
The average lifespan of a truck driver is SIXTY (60) years old. Yes, their average lifespan, not age of retirement. Which really goes to show you the dangers of a sedentary job + fast food + social isolation.
Careers that involve music or sound will most likely destroy your hearing and give you tinnitus if you don't wear ear protection from the start.
Pest-control work along with landscaping and agricultural jobs exposes you to harmful and neurotoxic chemicals.
Healthcare and nursing may involve a lot of movement but you are constantly around sick people and must deal with body parts and bodily fluids. Yuck. Also a high-stress work environment and odd hours.
As you can see, nearly every job out there is shitty for you in multiple ways. So what should you do if you need to work but also care about your health? Work From Home jobs are great because you can purchase a treadmill desk and walk as you work or periodically take a break from work and move and exercise at home throughout the day. Other options are working at a grocery store as a stocker (during the day) which allows you to walk and routinely move objects without breaking your back. Being a server or busser at a restaurant or cafe is also OK as you are physically active (just don't hang out in the kitchen for too long)!
To conclude, if you feel like modern society and work is total bullshit, it truly is. Most jobs regardless of pay or prestige are unnatural and incompatible with human health. Every major industry is incredibly corrupt and out to literally kill us for profit but that's another topic for another time. I just want to let you know that your grievances and concerns are 100% valid and understandable. I hope you all are safe and striving to be healthy and content despite existing in this cruel and fallen world. I pray that we'll all make it one day!
