Just had a harsh reminder that managers generally are not your friend. This manager I’ve been working with for 15 years. Been through some good, bad, and trying work times together. We’ve hung out plenty outside of work and even gone on short vacations together. Its generally an ok job and flexible enough to justify staying. For the past few years though due to some uncertainty in the market and economic issues there have been no raises or bonuses which has obviously made a lot of employees unhappy. I have voiced this to her numerous times and vented about job related things as a friend. Fast fwd to last month. Due to restructuring we were both moved to different departments and I got a new manager. New manager apparently asked my old manager if I was in line for a promotion and raise. She stated no for the reasons I have displayed a negative attitude and talked poorly about the company. New manager told me this word for word. What the actual fuck?? I’ve never had a poor review and did a lot of high level projects under her management. I’ve never been told of any complaints from clients or team members. Saying I’m upset is an understatement. She’s not my boss anymore and definitely not my friend. I am so perplexed as to why she would prevent me from getting a raise and a promotion when it would literally have zero affect on her. Not only that my new boss thinks I’m negative and not a team player so I will have to work extra hard to prove her wrong. Should I call my old boss/friend out of just move on and let it go. Really do not want to see her face or hear her voice ever again.
Edit she texted asking how my kids first week of school went… what a two faced bitch. Not sure if I should just ignore her or have a serious conversation.
