No advice needed, as this was a 20 year old event, give or take a couple years, but seeing some of the horror stories, I thought I'd share one that STILL gets on my nerves today. I was working at a convenience store in NY, I was early 20's, my ex-wife and I had just has our 2nd child. My co-worker was mugged in the parking lot as he was leaving the store at 10-11 at night after closing up. They did NOTHING for him. They let him take a couple days off, and that was it.
I began questioning what they were going to do, but apparently we didn't have any cameras outside. I asked where the ones inside were. Then began asking if they were even working, because there were no monitors in the back room and we never had to change the tapes, something I had to do at my previous job at a competitive store.
I was let go the next week, which was the first week of December for this line of questioning. The manager said that it was corporates decision. I argued with him because it was so close to Christmas, winter, and I was only making enough money to pay the bills, so I didn't know how I was going to pay for my apartment, electric, the whole nine. He ended up fessing up and telling me that it was because I was asking too many questions and he was sure that I was looking to steal from the company. I told him why I was asking, because I wanted SOMETHING done for my coworker or at least how to best protect myself because I was the other closer. He brought up that the previous week 20 dollars went missing from the register while I was working. he asked me to find it, WHICH I DID, mixed up in a different bill slot iirc, but I guess that just solidified his thought that I was trying to steal it.
I ended up getting hired at WalMart the following week, they were desperate for help during the Christmas season, so I was only out of work for like 12 days total, thank god. But fuck that guy. Just one more example on why our jobs don't give a shit about us. Do your job, make your money, live your life. Don't live for your job.
