Not paid overtime rate for a special event

Based in NY, I work a 40hr Monday to Friday day job. I’m scheduled to work a special event at a rate that is higher than my usual pay, but isn’t my overtime rate despite the fact that it will put me 9 hours over 40. This will be true for most of my coworkers as well. I’m sure this is illegal but I’m not sure if/how I should take action, I generally like this job after 6 months here but this seems to be the norm when there is a special event outside regular hours. I work for a fairly well known company so I’m shocked they’ve been getting away with this. Unsure how to proceed without making myself public enemy #1 here!
